Description- In this piece, you see a yellow bird perched
upon a tree branch. In the Bird, the most prominent color used was orange and
black. You see the bird looking curiously out towards a distance. You can
faintly see his little orange feet grasping the tree branch under him.
Analysis- One of the most emphasized elements that was
color. Color was shown in the bird’s body to give texture and depth. I started
with the primary color of yellow than used tints and shades of yellow to add
texture and interest. For the beak, I wanted to give highlights and lowlights
for where the light would shine. Because I used a reference photo, it was
easier to find where the darker and lighter parts should be. As for the bird’s
wings, I wanted to blend the colors very well. I started with the lighter
colors then went into the dark and then used a blending pencil to create a
smooth blend. For the tree branch, I stuck with very neutral tones. I just
placed different colors in different places then blended them to give a random
tree look.
Interpretation- This piece doesn’t really have much of a
story, as I just wanted to draw the bird. I like the way birds have blended
feathers. I also like the bold colors of birds and the way their bodies
look. As I started another piece of a
bird, I thought maybe I should do a series. This series of birds will all blend
together, as they will connect. The tree branch will start in one piece and
continue in another. In all the pieces, a bird will be the center of attention.
They will all have different poses and expressions. Also, each background color
will be different.
Judgment- I really liked how this piece turned out. It
was my second time drawing a bird in colored pencils. I definitely enjoyed my
choice of paper when drawing this as the color contrasts with the bird and
emphasizes it. The color also brings out a different look of each colored
pencil. Not all of the pieces are completed so I am excited to see how they
will all look together.
