Concentration

This piece was an experiment with acrylics. I don't usually wok with acrylics because I don't know very many techniques or ways to make it look good so i just wanted to see how I would do. This was also my last piece in my concentration series. Again another bird on a branch. I think colored pencils were easier to control but the acrylics were easy to blend and easier to clean up mistakes as I made many. This piece was derived from a photograph I found on the internet. I kept the colors pretty true to the actual image as well as keeping the branch and most details of the bird. I used many techniques to achieve the right textures of the body  On the head, I kind of dabbed the paint brush to achieve a more rough texture but with the belly of the bird, I used smoother brush strokes.  I tried to add different colors of orange and browns to the belly so it wasn't just one flat color. (very hard to see in the photograph) The branch was the hardest part of this painting. The colors just didn't seem to match up or work together. Trying to add highlights and lowlights ended up being very difficult. If I did this piece again, i might want to try watercolor or colored pencil

Drawing
Reference

This drawing was inspired by the reference picture that I found. I wanted to stick with the colorful bird theme. This piece, part of my concentration series, showed lots of details using the colored pencils. I wanted to make the bright colors of the hummingbird pop out so I used a more neutral color background. I tried to really show texture in this piece by using small pencil marks and making some areas really smooth and blended. I tried to keep the proportions of the bird true to the real picture but I think the wings turned out a little bigger than intended. I think the colors in this drawing turned out well but next time i think i want to use more browns and tans. I think if I did this piece again, I would add a flower or something else to add more interest in the piece. I think I could have gotten the proportions to be more accurate as well.

Bird Concentration

Reference                                                                        Drawing

This piece was created on a black matte board and was drawn with colored pencils. My idea was to put a lot of emphasis on the bird and the specific colors and making them pop out with the dark background. I chose a background that was similar to the dark feathers of the bird in order to make the brighter colors pop out more. In this piece, texture was used in every little crevice. Starting with the beak, I wanted to make a smooth texture like the real bird. I added the highlights just like the reference picture in order to receive a real effect. On the body of the bird, I had to get the texture of the feathers by using very small pencil marks. The branch that the bird is sitting upon had many scratches and small marks that had to be put in the drawing to give a real effect. I tried to keep the bird proportional to the actual image although the beak turned out to be a little off. If i did this piece again, i would try it on a different colored background or even a different type of paper.  So far i like how this piece is turning out and hopefully it will get better as more is completed.

1st project

In this piece, I wanted to draw an eagle but not just a flat portrait. I drew the background on watercolor paper and used red white and blue. The eagle was made on a separate paper to be cut out and put on the watercolor paper. I want the eagle to stand out a bit so I will make it raised. I wanted to use a full range of values for the eagle, using graphite pencils ranging from H to 8B. I really wanted to use proportion in this piece, keeping the scaling and sizing correct. I wanted to have contrast between light and dark colors, also with the mixed media. This piece is still in progress at the moment. I want to add more details to the birds feathers.

Cheetah Print Project

{Description} This print was made by the process of rusting. I found this picture on the internet and then printed it in high contrast negative and black and white. Once I did this, I took the printed paper and used acetone to transfer the ink to the metal plate. I soaked a piece of larger paper in a vinegar bath and then left the metal plate on top so the ink would negate the rusting in some spots. after 4 hours of the plate sitting on the paper, i took it off and it left a really neat rusted cheetah. To add more detail, i took some colored pencils and added some color into the piece. In the background, i added blues to hint that it was a sky. To the tiger spots, i darkened them with black.
{Analysis} In this piece, the picture was already composed. The composition was pretty straight forward as the tiger was right in the middle of the page. The print emphasized high contrast due to the rusting. There was a lot of texture shown in the piece. The branch had many small details that brought the picture texture. Line was used a lot in this picture to give fine details.

Dog in a hat

{description} this piece, although in progress, is a dog with a hat, bow tie and monocle. This dog wears a brown hat with a press sticker and a white strap. The dogs monocle sits on his eye that is looking to the left side on the page. The dog sits with his nose towards the top of that page. The dog has a pristine posture to him. I think that I will not ass a background because I like how the color makes the dogs face stick out.
{analysis} This drawing, done with colored pencil, shows many textures. The hat, for one, has many folds and highlights exhibited. The fur of the dog shows a lot of texture with all of the different colors. The bow tie on the dog has different highlights and lowlights, giving the bow a realistic look. Lots of contrast is shown in this piece as the dog sticks out of the page in contrast to the blue background. The bright whites against the dark darks also give the piece contrast and interest. Proportion was used in this piece as well as I had to get the dogs head and hat to match as well as he face and body size. His piece exhibits harmony as well as all of the components of the piece mend together and create a cohesive pieces.
{interpretation}I don't really have a story to this piece. I really liked the colors and texture I'm the piece so I created it.
{judgement} so far, I am really liking how this piece is turning out. I like all of the colors and contrast. I like the neutral tones and textures. I believe this piece will be pretty successful once it is complete
